If you've got bad credit, the first thing you need to do is take a long look at your credit report. While you will probably find outstanding debts that you are aware of on your report, you may also find some mistakes as well. If you do find mistakes, the first thing to do is write to the creditor listed to request debt validation. Below is a sample credit repair letter you can use when writing for this purpose:

To Whom It May Concern:

This letter is my response to your correspondence sent to me on (insert date here.) I am not refusing to pay, however I request debt validation which is under my rights according to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, 15 USC 1692, Sec. 809 (b). I am requesting proof that the debt you claim I owe is valid and that I am legally required to repay it. Please send me the following information:

* Exactly what purpose or item the money is owed for
* An explanation of how the amount stated was determined
* Copies of any agreements signed by me related to this debt
* Copies of any judgments reached
* Proof the Statue of Limitations has not expired
* Proof of your licensure to practice in this state

Also please be aware that if your company has reported any false information to any one of the three major credit bureaus, this may be an action classified as fraud under State and Federal laws and regulations. If this debt is invalid and there are negative items on my credit report listed by your company that should not be there, I will pursue any necessary legal action as is my right under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

If your company fails to respond or provide the necessary verifications as requested within 30 days, all items listed on my credit report must be removed from my credit report and documentation proving this was completed must be sent to me.

I also request that no further communication via telephone be made to either my home or work place. Communication is to be sent via US Postal Mail only. This letter is an attempt to validate and correct a debt and any information I receive will be used for this purpose.
