Credit Repair After Bankruptcy -- Tips for Success

If you've experienced bankruptcy before, then you probably realize that it is not easy to regain your credit. After all, you can expect bankruptcy to remain on your credit report for seven years or sometimes even longer. Many credit providers won't grant credit to people who've filed for bankruptcy, but all hope is not lost. It is possible to obtain credit repair after bankruptcy.

Once you've filed for bankruptcy, you will need to be very careful about how you handle your money in the future. This means paying all your bills on time, each and every month. The last thing you want after bankruptcy is more bad credit. Once you've established a pattern of paying all your expenses on time and have no outstanding bad debts on your credit report, you can start attempting to add good credit history to your report.

This can be done by obtaining credit in the right places. Credit unions are often a good place to start. Once you join a credit union, ask if they offer secured lines of credit. A secured credit card is one where you deposit an amount of money equal to your credit limit to secure the line of credit. Once you have a secured credit card or line of credit, make absolutely sure you pay on time each and every month. It's wise to pay a bit more than the minimum payment each month, to make a dent in your balance.

Other places to obtain easy credit include department stores and furniture stores. Once you have established a few credit lines and shown that you can pay them on time, you will begin to receive more offers for credit and get approved for credit more easily. Just make sure you don't go overboard! Keep your credit obligations to an affordable level to avoid missing payments and damaging your credit further. You may find that the percentage rates on your credit cards are quite high, although in time you will be able to qualify for lower rates if you stay vigilant about prompt repayment.

Another option for credit repair after bankruptcy is to visit a non-profit credit counseling organization such as Consumer Credit Counseling. This organization specializes in helping people improve their credit and keep it that way. It may not be fast or easy to rebuild credit after you've filed for bankruptcy, but it can be done!
